This page includes instructions on how to install the Ångström Distribution images on the SL-5600 series Zaurus PDA's, also called Poodle.
What you will need:
- SL-5600 series PDA
- Your AC adapter
- CF or SD card formatted with fat16
- Test images
Getting the Images
Please navigate to one of the following websites to download Angstrom images:
Stable Images - http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/images/poodle
Unstable testing images - http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/autobuild/poodle
- I'd propose to use Angstrom-opie-image-glibc-ipk-2007.12-r18-poodle-installkit.tgz (or higher) from unstable
Choose the one with the latest date. You will need to download the installkit file from this directory.
Choose the opie installkit if you want Opie, gpe installkit if you want gpe, x11 installkit if you want an X server, or the minimalist installkit if you don't need a gui. Check the md5sum for the package and unpack the tarball if it passes.
File Names
- updater.sh
- zImage.bin
- initrd.bin
Preparing the Update
Now, connect your CF or SD card to your computer using a card reader and drag those three files above to the root of the card. Eject the card, making sure the changes are written.
Updating
- Plug in your Zaurus using the AC adapter, the update will not proceed without external power.
- Turn the zaurus over and flip the battery case switch to “Replace battery”. Remove the battery cover, and find the small reset microswitch below the battery (you don't need to remove the battery itself). Use your stylus to press it.
- Replace the battery cover and move the switch to “Normal operation”.
- Insert the CF or SD card with the image in the root, as described above.
- Press the “OK” key on the front and keep it pressed while pressing the “On/Off” button.
- The Maintenance Screen will display. Choose “Update” this is item 4.
- The next screen will ask the source, choose either “CF” or "SD" depending on your media.
- The next screen asks for confirmation, choose “Yes” this is the left button.
The Zaurus will now erase the flash, write the new image, then reboot to your new operating system. Note that the flashing process does not erase your /home directory, therefore settings from other systems may remain there and possibly cause problems This process is almost the same as for the C7xx/C8xx series.
